    1. I’d really like to know equipment 101- basically everything that you’ll need in order to shoot decent- if not really awesome video. and price ranges.

    2. want to know more about audio, synchronizing , now to reduce natural sound in the background. etc.

    3. how to use certain special effects on Premiere Pro. I have tutorials, but it’d be nice to have a short hand version of the tutorials.

I would like for you to show us how to make a DVD Menu which has Video running in the Background.

Also an interesting topic would be: Dealing with High Definition. There are HD Cameras out there now will this put a hurting on standard hard drives? What type of processing speed will be needed to deal with it. Is it even worth it?

PC Vs. Macs: What do you suggest?

I also want to know about some specific effects such as speeding up video. I once recorded me building a pc and want to turn that into a youtube video which has a 9 minute limitation. I want to speed up some parts and put some chopped up audio to it from the same recording.. but making it concise and to the point.

Thats it for now, and I’m glad you did accept doing that ym promo video :)

Hey and you never mentioned that you started out using Windows Movie Maker! :)

    Salaams,

Thank you so much for this! Truly inspiring stuff for a 16 year old filmmaker like me. If someone like you who knew nothing when you were my age can do so much, it really is encouraging! I actually KNOW a lot of the technical details of filmmaking and story already. I HAVE won awards for my work. But the mentality I have that all this schoolwork is inhibiting my time to make films needs to be broken, and action should be taken NOW.

I’m most interested in the Dawah-related marketing starategies; sounds like you’ll already have plenty to say about that.

Jazak Allah khair for putting so much effort into this Belal.

    How about the following:

    1) What are simple camcorders out there that will produce good quality video, that are reliable, convenient, and have high enough specs to do the cools. Looking to spend around 300-500. Having said that, it is important to tell you that the videos will be mostly online, so that should help you out alot.

    2) How many hours per week would a person need to spend to make good 10 minute videos?

    3) What are good ways to become a good video producer, Does one need to attend film/video school to learn? Or more like practice at home, read tutorials online and go that route? I’m saying this for someone interesting in advancing to work for big film industries, like Hollywood for example, to get the experience and maybe later even start their own :) so where to start?

I don’t need editing or composition skills using After Effects etc. What I do like to see and learn more of is:

    1. How to set up an office or room interview. What do I need for lighting? Where do I position them? Do I light the background as well from the back? Do I light from cieling?

    2. I like to shoot with two camera’s, so what camera’s are out there? Do you know of a reputable compani in UK? How do I set them up? Do I need to do something in using some modes or extra knowledge on the camera so the format is right, the lighting is right?

    All of the planning stages.

    3. What material I need for green screen background? How can I make one of my rooms into a Studio with all this.

Something like a sketch, a video showing this and most of all…which no one here is going to ask….

Online Mentorship cause you might be in another country if not UK or, is if you are in UK, can we have a mentorship programme.

To meet once a month and ask face to face questions etc.

    1. i think the first stage is to remind our own muslims of who they are, hamdolellah so many non muslims are coming to islam which is beautiful but what about our own ummah how about the ppl who are muslims but arent practising at all, muslim by name , how can we wake them up and remind them about thier identity and responsibilities as muslims.
i would love to do that somehow becuase like many countries im from a muslim country but my people have very little knowledge about islam due to the war and other factors that they were kept away from islam and education.i would love to do something to start telling our own muslims about thier deen , i see it difficult soem how to reach them, but if my videos are good i can ask the tv channels to show them so i got that potential source that i can reach out to my audiance..jazakallahu khairun, from london

how i can go about doing anything to invite them to islam, personally i had a very bad experiance going back home which is a islamic country and seeing people so ignorant about the message of islam and the whole society seemed very corrupted , no manners to respect for women , very very very bad situation,, i felt the first and important step is to remind muslims of who they are..soemtimes it feels impossible but i felt videos can be a very good way to educate ppl and remind them ..

  22. As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuh ~ Brother Kemal, this is an awesome opportunity, may Allah reward you 1000s of times over, amin.
    1. I have a blog, just started, not much, a lil unfocused. Realized yesterday that I need to take it, revamp, and get busy with killing two birds with one stone: keeping ties with family/relatives & da’wah work. Because it will also be a pitstop for my friends to check in (most all of whom are Muslim), then this would also be da’wah to Muslims too. It would be exactly how my life is - where two worlds converge; the idea being to give exposure to Islam through the context of sharing my life & adventures, with a “for the curious” tab under which would be dawah head on.
    2. I saw your promo and thought it’d be way cool to have video/shortfilm clips on site. A pic is worth a thousand words.
    3. So here’s the deal: I have absolutely - and I mean aBSoluTeLy - no experience making videos (with the exception of one shaky home video, lol), films, and whatnot. I’m starting totally fresh, so I don’t even know what I want to know. Know what I’m sayin? Everything I see above in the other comments sounds cool at this point.

I’ve worked with video before and I’d love to learn more about:

1- good lighting, how do you make something look professional and more movie-like, rather than making it look like a home movie?

2- halal sound effects! I know you you only halal music in your trailers, etc - where do you get those from? What do you use? I think sound is an integral part of many videos, yet it can be a real challenge when you’re trying to stay away from musical instruments and stuff.

There is much more you can teach us, but i see you already have a lot on your plate for now!

    thanks and jazakallahu khairan!

    2. What’s the best approach in making kick-butt videos in a VERY limited amount of time? (starting from scratch vs. cutting and pasting clips from other video clips)

Al salamu alaikum, JZK Br. Belal, may Allah bless your efforts.

I have some basic background in audio recording and editing but for voice only, i.e. I don’t know how to do any special effects.
I’ll be honest w/ you, I don’t know anything about making videos or posting them online. I do know, however, that such videos are the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of the people in this day and age. Let’s face it, if your information booth (Daawah table) consists of just paper pamphlets you may be lucky to get a few hits in a few hours. However, if you have on display an attractive video or if you post that up on a site or send a link to it, you could easily reach hundreds or thousands of hit by the will of Allah.

Also, I’m big on social justice. The hypocrisy of most politicians make me sick. They discuss poverty, homelessness, crime, injustice and more from a purely academic and strategic perspective. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve said to myself: Man, I wish I could just take a camcorder to area X and just talk to the people personally and put a face to their plight.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Asalaamu Alaykum Brother!

Jazak Allah Khair for your generous intentions, goals, vision and loving kindness in Islam.

Well I’ve watched your vid and you obviously did an amazing job, because I am soooooooooo excited! :-) Subuhana Allah!

I was just feeling so lost the other day, frustrated and sad because I have all the intentions and ambition to make daw’ah videos, but don’t know even the first step how? and I so want to contribute and be part of a great change Insh’Allah! In the Name of Allah(SWT) for our Ummah and World.
So I began making du’ah to Allah(SWT) to help me with His(SWT) guidance, love and wisdom Insh’Allah! To somehow, someway Insh’Allah! find and learn the tools to make great and impacting videos for purposes of daw’ah.
Subuhana Allah! Alhamduli Allah! Next thing I know, a friend on “YouTube” suddenly sends me your video and invitation! Mash’Allah! Mash’Allah! :-)

If I am blessed enough to have the opportunity to receive your instruction, guidance and help to participate in the “webinar” and larger daw’ah projects Insh’Allah!

I really need to start from the a,b,c’s of it :-/
I know probably not as techi and exciting as my other Brothers and Sisters who have been blessed with knowledge and some experience already Mash’Allah!

I taken a daw’ah course by Brother Bilal Philips Alhamduli Allah! of course one can never learn too much!

My main focus and concerns are to learn how to use programs to create both presentation videos as well as the very exciting “grass roots documentaries” and how to go about that process?
Also I think a brother had already mentioned sound/visual affects to really stand out and capture the audience and give a polished, professional edge :-) Needless to say direction to “user friendly”, good and low cost sources.
To choose a third element and to keep my comments condensed. As you brother have the experience Mash’Allah! I leave it with you to choose the 1,2,3’s or a,b,c’s for those of us who have never made a video before :-)

May Allah(SWT) Shower you with His(SWT) Mercy, blessings and abundant reward for your intentions, striving, work and your hand of help to this Ummah in His(SWT) Name for this dunyah and most of all with Jannat Al Firdows for the Akhirah Insh’Allah! Aameen.

Hope to hear from you Insh’Allah to be part of your team :-)
    Barak Allah Feek.
    Yasmine.

    I would like to learn
    1. Entire process A to Z (teaching to beginners)
    2. Tools, software and programs
    3. Process, tricks of the trade, making it stand out from the rest

    My Dawah is focused on:
    - Non-Muslims (predominatly chritians and jews) Topic centered short videos
    - New Mulims - Basics of Islam - short videos
    - Muslim youth getting them active and invloved in Islam (knowledge and community activism)

    Assalamu Alaikum,
May Allah (swt) reward you for everything and anything you’ve done in his path.

Alhamdulillah, I have a variety of tools and programs at my hand, Adobe Master Collection CS3, with SoundBooth, Flash, Premiere Pro, AfterEffects, etc.
However, my knowledge in these videos is close to none. I have made various videos with Windows Movie Maker, but I am sure with Message Mastery, much more could be learned to give da’wah with more success.
A few things I’d like to learn are:
    1. More details on using these programs to create presentations.
    2. Creating Documentaries.
    3. Presenting the information to Non-Muslims efficiently.
    4. Using the tools in an organized and logical fashion to create a video with as much quality as possible with an equalized amount of effort and time put into it.
    5. Adding special effects to videos.
    6. Lighting, props, lens, etc.

    Jazakallahu Khair,

    Asalaamu Alaaikum!

Alhamdulilah for this oppurtunity to learn. I think using Multimedia (audio, video) and online resources (sites, chat groups, forums) are the best forums of dawah Alhamdulilah. JazaakAllah Khair for wanting to teach your muslim brothers and sisters tips on how to make great dawah videos. I make some already, but they are mainly (only!) windows movie maker projects, with pictures, rarely with video clips.
    My questions:
1)the best equipment to use (at the cheapest price!). I don’t want to become like a real filmaker, subhanAllah. And I’m not sure if I want to go into documentary. I just want to make stock videos of nature, and other things maybe like events…
2)what program to use? how much is it? what free programs do you know of [besides windows movie maker]
3)My target audience is all Muslims, so what main message should be in my videos?

BarakAlahu Feek brother, May Allah grant you jannah in the next life, ameen

    Wa’alaykum Asalaam
    your sister Anisa aka Shaykha

P.S. Those al maghrib videos rock! I love them, subhanAllah. How long did it take you to make them?

What i want to learn from this prog?

Salamz Belal….I am a recent revert to Islam, after many years in the Christian church. I have always had a heart for the truth of God’s grace and mercy to be poured out among the people….yet now I am most compelled to speak the truth of the beauty of Islam to the world…both Christian as well as secular. I also have such compassion for the people of Palestine and desire to raise my “voice” in protest of the atrocities occuring there that most of the Western world is unaware of.

My goals are to use the creativity that Allah has given me to spread truth…in whatever forum that may be. I have talent for writing, and am able to understand marketing strategies, yet have no knowledge of video production.

I have witnessed the power of even basic media as seen in Baba Ali’s videos….simple yet effective, and would appreciate any teachings concerning fundamental media production.

    Salaam Alaykum

    1) Where do we get resources such as content that we will be saying. So that we are able to talk upon a certain subject, for a period of time. For example what websites do we need to have access to so that we can learn the information ourselves so that we can latter on pass the message to others by. Such as websites, blogs, books, DVD’s.

    2) After we record the footage for our film, what editing software do we need to edit it. So that we are able to cut, edit and delect different scenes, so please provide us with editing software that is appropriate for us to use. For people who don’t have knowledge of how to use editing programs. Such as lessons to lessons to teach how to use the software. And how can we get a hold of this software for free. As I’m a student who does not have much money.

    3) Marketing the videos that I make will be necessary, so that people are able to view it. But how will people be able to view my videos such as from what websites should i upload my videos. Such as YouTube, Google videos and others. And also how can people search my videos on Google. So that I’m able to get a lot of hits on them.

    4) Even thou this is not that important but how can I make money from the hits I gain from the videos I make. Such as using programs such as Google Adsence, where by every time you click on a advertisement that’s on the side of a page, you as the owner of that website will get about £0.05 to £2 per click of that advertisement. This money can be used later on to invest money into future dawah projects, or producing Islamic material.

    Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah

I have some experience with amateur film production from my school days, which I have fond memories of, and would love to get back into insha’Allah.

I believe my personal focus is directing and cinematography. I love the artistic side to filming, and have a strong perfectionist streak when it comes to trying to make something flow seamlessly, with a bit of flare thrown in.

Therefore, I would like to learn the insider secrets of how to get that “perfect” shot, including manipulation of the environment and “actors” if one has them.

I would also like to learn good marketing strategy that could be applied to other aspects of my dawah work, including my blogging activities, insha’Allah.

Finally, as a good director and producer, I believe one should know how to manage one’s team and resources, especially when you have zero budget. So resource management (as well as “how to get something for nothing” tips) would be great, insha’Allah.

My target audience would be pretty general; most likely the “youtube” generation. I would love to make films that cross the boundaries of religion, and concentrate on common ground - “universal truths” that are perfected in Islam, such as the search for truth that drives so many to ask the “big questions”.

Anyway, my comment is far too long already. I pray this project is a great success, and that we all benefit from it in this life and the next. Ameen.

salaaemalekum. incha’allah my husband and i will be in senegal for ten months (starting in june) to do research. we are interested in 1. Qur’anic schools for girls and 2. how religion and literature are taught in public high schools. is literature taught in a way that encourages the students to strengthen their deen and to question certain unislamic traditions? or are students taught secular or french literature and are they discouraged from using critical thinking? the audience would be 1. kids interested in reading and learning and 2. american and senegalese high school teachers interested in using multiethnic texts to encourage critical thinking in the classrooms. which teachers are the most effective in getting their students analyzing their environment and how is this strengthening their deen? we know nothing about filming and just spent all our savings on a camera. we need to learn the basics of editing! and then incha’allah we can share our videos at high school teacher conferences in america and senegal! and maybe teachers could use our videos in their classrooms to teach american youth more about dfiferent muslim cultures. if this works, we’d like to do the same in other muslim countries incha’allah! thank you for your advice!

I would be total noobie at this, so everything I could learn would be valuable, from equipment to techniques. I took a film making class about 25 years ago, when student films were still done on 16mm film stock….the writing techniques will still transfer, but equipment, sound, vid and editing have all changed since then.
I would like to know what good quality video and audio equipment I should look for on a very small budget, editing software, etc., as well as tech stuff.
My target audience would be non-Muslims, new Muslims, and those who once came to Islam but drifted away due to family interference or disillusionment/lack of community support, and those struggling to increase their practice.

ive always had an interest in producing islamic videos and im doing pretty well on youtube. my videos are capturing but yet very amateur in nature. i use basic windows movie maker.

my main driving theme is muslim unity both sunnis, shias etc….but as for encouraging the practice of Islam, i have always aimed for christians. i aim to debunk christian myths and hope to encourage christians to view the beautiful and moderate Islam.

i would LOVE to be able to produce more beautifully. i do not include myself in the videos as i usually have verses and clips that capture audiance. im not the talking type so things like effects, sound, video, transition, and again effects…..lol……i thankyou brother for helping us with this……

    Salam bro.,
it would be nice if you give us lessons based on opensource/free software. as many of us don’t have expensive stuff like Adobe premiere.
specifically I’d like lessons on processing audio and lighting. “Jazaka Allahu khairan”.

I’d like to know techniques on audio editting. I started doing it by playing around with audacity. Unfortunately, i dont experiment with any of the effects. I only play with the sound waves to delete mistakes, correct mis-pronounciations and remove certain background sounds/noises.

    INVENTORY
    Sony handycam MiniDV
    Tripod
    250MB External Hard drive
    Windows Movie Maker
MashAllah Good Homemade PC (that my cousin made) which will be even better once I re install Windows on it.

    HEDHHOG CONCEPT
I have some prior experience with windows movie maker. So far I have made four “productions”. Two mini ones and two major ones in highschool. I do feel like it’s something I have a passion for- that is writing a script and making it come to life.

I feel I am good at poetry and words.
I feel I am creative and innovative with limited materials
I feel I am good at comedy (maybe not standup) but directing others and telling them how they can be funny

I, at the moment, really don’t see how I can make significant money off of movie production other than what you do (promotional and marketing services).

    Asalamu alaykum brother,

You know what this is exacly what i’ve been dreaming about, how to make cool videos for dawah purposes and i’m so exited!

Okay three things i want to learn, this has probably been mentioned before:

    1) A step to step guide on how to make a video, the hows, why, whats of all what you do.

    2) The resouses needed to make the videos

    3) The challenges we will face and the solutions to them challenges and how we overcome them

    JazakAllah khairun
