Five Ways To Geek Out With Me

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

Our ability to produce and playback video is what is driving the speedy progression of technology today. The easier it is for the layman to make a movie, the more readily knowledge and information will be available to people like you and I.

I’ve been geekin’ out this past few weeks.

Phillip Bloom and Stu Maschwitz are two people I regularly keep updated with on twitter and RSS. Recently there has been a big buzz on the release of the Canon 7D digital SLR camera that also happens to do HD 1080 24p video (and more).

What’s the big deal?

It gives people like you and I the opportunity to tell stories and influence people via a tool that makes our presentation visually appealing and professional without putting a too big of a hole in our bank accounts. If used appropriately the work produced with such equipment can look identical to something that was shot with professional equipment.

This was shot with the Canon 7D with a Canon 35mm f1.4 lens mounted in front.

Understand, the camera wont make you a professional film maker. The results I’m about to show you are 80% the man and 20% the machine.

The following video was also made by Phillip Bloom in a time span of one night.

What does this mean to us?

If multimedia equipment had been cheap and affordable from the beginning then people would learn how to visually communicate by simply picking up a camera and pressing the record button. Movies, media and content would have been widespread and easy to find.

However in the duration of the 20th century camera and multimedia equipment wasn’t cheap, nor was learning how to use it any cheaper. If you learned it you were an individual dedicated to the craft and-or business of entertainment and media.

At the turn of the 21st century, something amazing happened. Technology advanced, internet speeds increased and camera equipment became almost dirt cheap.

People starting pressing the record buttons on the cameras available in the Mac, cell phones, Nintendo DS and camcorders and putting it up on on places like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and more.

Since the opportunity is available to us, why don’t we see any real content being produced by us all to a respectable standard?

Just because I have a pen and paper, doesn’t mean I know how to write. Technological and communicative literacy is horribly lacking.

What do we do?

  • Start learning! – Resources are available to you. (MesasgeMastery.com for one).
  • Apply what you learn. - Just do it. Make your own movies, shorts, trailers, etc. Do the stuff that seems challenging, fun and interesting. Tell a story, even if it be about yourself.
  • Experiment and do it often – Learn a process that works for you. If it doesn’t, break it down and make another one. This is the foundation of innovation.
  • Focus on completing a project - You don’t want to spread yourself thin nor should you allow yourself to get overwhelmed and quit.
  • Share Your work with others – Use the social media tools available to you and share your work. Gain feedback. Apply the lessons and do it again!

  1. I’ve been thinking about this same thing. With all these new technologies available, it’s gonna be much easier for a regular layman to follow some tutorials and make an amazing movie (if they work hard enough), bu this means that those in the industry have to be ground-breakingly awesome in order to stay ahead. Even now with my little knowledge, I’m not as impressed with basic techniques in films that I already know from my online resources and tutorials.

Can’t wait when I get into my industry (whichever it may be) to try and shatter some standards inshaAllah!

  2. You really know how to pull someone like me into a post, eh? ;)

I can’t believe I missed the release of the 7D! This seems to be the one everyone has been waiting for. I think the cost will likely be too prohibitive for most people, including myself (I haven’t checked yet), but I’ve been looking at the SX1 which is a bridge camera that has a 20X zoom built-in. Quality will not approach any of the xD series from Canon, but it’ll definitely be a step-up from my A550. Plus, it has 1080p30 as a feature as well.

The cost of the camera body is about $1700 USD and to get the lens that was used in the video above would be another $1300

The cost is less than that of your typical prosumer camcorders. I don’t know how long the recording goes on one CF card. I can’t imagine it be more than 24 mins or so.

  4. I think the 7D is too rich for my blood at the moment. The more likely candidate for me is the 500D or, as I mentioned above, the SX1.

P.S. I’ve got some more videos I’ve been working on (mostly time lapse). I should be posting them soon.

lookin forward to the vids :)

  6. Just got my old PCs up-and-running, so maybe by this weekend I can have some goodies, in shaa? Allaah.
