iCare To Play – Systemically Dominate Your Market

Here it is, the second session that I did with Rutgers Newark. This one is all about practical steps you can take to start moving your dawah forward.

Just note:

  • The first 30 seconds or so, the audio is out of sync.
  • The audio quality improves as the video progresses – I had accidentally tripped on the audio recorders power cable, killing the direct audio feed for the first 12 minutes or so.

    As I’m watching the video, several questions are popping up, so here goes:

    1. Why do you say on our blogs that we shouldn’t talk about, “I did this, I did that” and that should be left for celebrities? You yourself mentioned that you once wrote a blog post about how your Facebook account was once disabled and how you got dozens of comments from like-experienced people. Now, your case may be different from the average Abdullah as your videos have 70K+ viewers, but if it is all about connecting with others and finding some common ground per se, shouldn’t that be allowed or perhaps encouraged?

    2. Should the money be considered in the beginning? I’ve noticed that while talking to certain people about their newly begun projects, they mention, “Yeah, we hope a big company will one day buy it”. They do love the coding behind it and it does have a somewhat beneficial angle to it, but if someone has that as the focus in mind, is that alright? Many take blogging and social media as a hobby and as an avenue to spend their time chilling. If they blog just to share their ideas, is that fine and then possibly monetize certain aspects once it really launches off, or must the monetary angle be considered from the beginning?

    3. Why must the social media be an extension of your ‘real’ life? I understand where you’re coming from, but just for the sake of argument, can’t it not be argued that a person who spends his whole day blogging/vlogging and connecting with others online be more beneficial than someone who doesn’t spend as much time and perhaps be spending his time helping offline? Sure he has friends who may frequent his site, but won’t that be hurting his national and international reach?

    4. You’re saying that it’s good to have people flowing between the different social tools. Why would we want to do that and not streamline it into one project? For example, if I really want to discuss the Palestinian Occupation, should I make a Facebook group and get the discussions going, or should I message everyone I know or get the word out via an FB page about a post I wrote on the issue and concentrate the discussion on there? If they’re on the website, why would we want them on the FB group and posting their discussion on there?

    5. What is the point of getting the word out for a specifically local project (ex. MSA, Qabeelah, local Masjid)? Their goal is to service the local community around them, so why go through the pains of having a social media network and communicating with people from across the nation? Shouldn’t they just communicate with their niche via emails and offline marketing?

    These questions are just to better understand social media and how to concentrate on the message. JazaakAllahu Khayran for taking the time to read this :)
