QA – Engaging Audience With Emotion
Question:
What do you suggest we can do to make our video trailer emotional and have it stand out against all the other video trailers that are out there?
Answer:
You need to drill down and be more specific. Answer the following questions and you’ll be closer to answer your own question.
- What specific emotion are you trying to pull?
- What story can we tell the audience to magnify the emotion?
- How do you want to differentiate your trailer from others? – Color scheme? Sound? Imagery? Story?
The videos and trailers that many Muslims and Islamic organizations have been putting out tend to be visually boring and they all have seem to have the same cliche imagery of masajid and arabic calligraphy.
I hope that the examples from past trailers I’ve done may lend some insight.

- I wanted the audience to feel as though they’ll be embarking on a journey that is huge and literally out of this world. Wanted them to feel as though they’re connected to something larger than life.
- I wanted to also communicate the stories of Musa, Ibrahim, Iblees would be there.
- The poster for BOC was distinctively BLUE and thus the trailer was made to be such. Also the audio presentation was to relay a similar effect, so I opted to use Opera as opposed to the beatboxing+nasheed combo I’ve used in the past.

- The main objective with the audio and visuals of this trailer was to make the viewer feel as though this is something that has to do with the core of an individual’s existance – their “DNA”
- The common color association that people have with “light” is white and yellow. Sun is yellow when its out. The tungstun lights in our homes is yellow. The poster has a “yellowish-orange” color scheme thus the trailer’s color scheme was such.
- It makes it distinct from the others.

- The emotion that I wanted the viewer to feel in this was a “connectedness” to humanity and a feeling to “indebtness” to rasulAllah-saw. – The visuals were meant to accomplish the former and the audio-CONTENT was meant to accomplish the latter.
- There wasn’t a specific intended color scheme to this trailer
–
- The objective of the trailer was to associate “AlMaghrib” with the feeling and sense of “modern” – “high-tech” – “executive” – “fast-paced-community”Audio was set to achieve the last emotion. The visuals >> people people in suit style jacks lookling like they’re full of confidence + the sharp edged shapes were meant to give the feeling of that “premiere/modern” feel.
- Since AlMaghrib’s branding is with the purple color scheme, the trailer’s overall color scheme was kept as such.
In the four trailers I’ve pointed out, the presentation style is uniquely different visually and in audio – all to achieve a specific emotion and feel that gives the trailer its own identity and stick in the minds of people.

I hope that helps.

Love all the trailers, great insight on how they were made…the intentions and reasoning for certain elements of the videos, alhamdulillah
