Why Social Media is an Extention of Real Life

Why must the social media be an extension of your ‘real’ life?
Can’t it not be argued that a person who spends his whole day blogging/vlogging and connecting with others online be more beneficial than someone who doesn’t spend as much time and perhaps be spending his time helping offline?
Sure he has friends who may frequent his site, but won’t that be hurting his national and international reach?
